Happy Father's Day (to me)
I've been gifted a Saturday morning of freedom! Might go see a movie or sit at Barnes and Noble by myself.
Hey y’all,
I hope your week is wrapping up quite nicely. As always, if you found anything interesting on the internet, please let me know!
This weekend is Father's Day (at least here in the US) so I have been gifted a Saturday morning of freedom! I don't know what I will be doing tomorrow, but I have no childcare responsibilities tomorrow from about 8 am to 1 pm. I may go see a movie, or I may go to Barnes and Noble by myself. I’ll probably drink a few Diet Cokes in celebration of me.
Hopefully you're doing something fun this weekend, especially if you are a father, I hope you get to do something enjoyable!

### Thoughts from the week
I've been thinking so much recently about focus and doubling down. You'll see some of the tweets this week hint at that and if you listen to Mostly Technical, Ian and I talked about focusing. I feel excited about doubling down on database related content and database education. I feel excited about making more YouTube videos and trying to eliminate everything else. It is, of course, a little bit of a risk, but I think we have a good track record and a good history with database courses. I'm mentally thinking that the next at least year, probably two years, are going to be almost entirely focused on databases.

Parenting styles aside, this last sentence here made me laugh out loud. When I went out of town last week, my wife texted me about an hour after I left and said that our oldest daughter was trying to convince my wife that I was flying on an airplane. She started crying because my wife was telling her that I was not on an airplane. Kids are just hysterical.

This one's not a tweet, it's a[ long form article](https://www.terrain.com/option-rot) and I have added this to my stack of articles that are good enough to print. This article is about having so many options that you end up missing out on the real opportunities. The hard part about having a lot of options is that it’s not always a good thing.
I feel like I have historically had a lot of options and maybe have preserved my optionality for too long, which is part of what's driving me to focus on database courses instead of just courses in general. I want to double down and commit to something and see what's possible.

I'm sure that every generation has their own anxieties about what the world is going to look like, but this one is certainly up there for me. It does feel a little bit like now is the last time where you can use your skills to make money, and then after that I'm not really sure what's going to happen. I know that it's an irrational fear, but with everything changing so quickly, it's hard to not feel that just a little bit.

I grew up on the Beach Boys music blasting on the outside speakers while I jumped on the trampoline. So I have very fond memories associated with the Beach Boys. I haven't followed Brian Wilson or pretended to know about him very much, but hearing these vocals all by themselves was kind of impressive.

I took piano lessons for several years and enjoyed it, but never got very good at it. Seeing it laid out like Guitar Hero here makes it even more impressive. This entire clip is mesmerizing. I watched the full two and a half minutes just kind of with my jaw hanging open at not only the difficulty to play it but he wrote this. Like somebody had to come up with this and that just blows my mind.

Lots of people have been asking me recently for more AI content and I have been diligently resisting getting distracted. But this article right here from Philip is the kind of AI content that I personally want to read. Very practical, very reasonable, not hype. I would encourage you to go give this one a read if you're at all interested in Claude Code.

Here's your weekly sampling of beautiful old houses. I don't know why I'm so drawn to these, but you're gonna probably get one every week.

My wife's minivan has CarPlay, but it only works if your phone is plugged in, which can be super annoying. Apparently, this exists and can convert your wired CarPlay to wireless CarPlay. I haven't tried it out yet, but you better believe it is on its way!

How delightful.
How warm and tactile.
I wish there were more household products like this.
My router is safely hidden away in a closet so I don't need this, but I think if I was super rich I would probably spend time doing hobbies like this, building out things in a very thoughtful way.

“Scope creep for courage” is perhaps one of the most useful framings I've come across recently. The more hard things you do, the easier it is to do hard things. Pushing your comfort zone makes it easier to do those things in the future!
I feel like right now I'm pushing my comfort zone in a lot of ways, both in parenting and family life and in work life. It is a nice encouragement to me that even three or four years ago, I would have never imagined that I would be doing some of the stuff that I'm doing now. I hope that that trend continues! I want to constantly be pushing my boundaries of what I am capable of, even though that is kind of hard. (Ok, really hard)

Just absolutely devastating. I cannot imagine the weight that he must have had to bear for the rest of his life.
